Workshop Summary

With this workshop you will learn:

- What is the difference between the several materials currently available for 3DP

- Materials selection for 3D Printed Parts

-The relationship to the different software/equipments /processes

At the workshop you will also learn to differentiate the properties of each of the most common filaments in 3D printing that have been created for different types of applications. Through written documentation and practical exercises (Live 3D printing) you will learn the technical parameters, secrets and tricks that differentiate the filaments and their suitability for each type of application. We will also learn the relationship between Slic3r and CURA parameters on efficiency and quality in 3D printing for different filaments.

Who should attend

This course will be useful to technicians, enginers, entrepreneurs, nurses, doctors, teachers, students, makers, promakers, architects, and any person that has been involved with 3D Printers and who is interested to take him/her knowledge to a deeper level.

The instructor will be Djamila Olivier González, Materials Engineer and Technical Consultant for Polymers, Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing.

Course Summary

Additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D Printing processes were developed more than twenty five years ago; however, the increasing availability of in-house advanced computing systems has enabled the massive appeareance of new bussiness models and design tools which enables its use for all kind of new users. Additive manufacturing for healthcare applications is one of the fields with a higher forecasted growth because of the amazing improvements this techniques allow with their innovative applications. From organs printing to personalized implants, going through cosmetic orthotics and medical modeling, the 3D Printing for the healthcare sector has come to stay forever.

The goal of this course is to present a comprehensive overview of the Design and Fabrication of 3D Printed Medical Applications, spanning from fundamentals to applications and technology tricks. Participants will learn the fundamentals of 3D Printing of polymers, metals, composites, and biomaterials, and will realize how process capabilities (rate, cost, quality) are determined by the material characteristics, process parameters, and machine designs. Application areas will be discussed via detailed examples and case studies. Particular emphasis will be placed on emerging metal- and powder-based AM technologies, and related design considerations. Lab sessions will provide hands-on experience on the use of the involved software applications. Participants will design, fabricate, and measure test parts.  The course will conclude with a project management for 3D printed applications overview. A certification will be provided to the participants.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn from hands on experience the workflow for the virtual model generation, from the personalized  geometry of the patient.

  2. Understand the scope and technology involved for current healthcare applications of 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing

  3. Understand the principles of materials selection for inert, biocompatible or bioactive applications of 3D printed objects

  4. Realize the different fabrication methods understanding the requirements and the constraints of each via case studies.

  5. Develop a comprehensive overview of the Project Management tasks required to realize a new medical 3D Printed product

  6. Foster a collaborative network between the participants of the course and also between the Voxeled Materials User´s Group.

Who should attend

This course will be useful to physicians, surgeons, nurses, radiologists, biomedical engineers, tissue engineering specialists, design engineers, manufacturing engineers, product designers, research engineers, research scientists, managers, VPs of product development and manufacturing, and technology and innovation strategists, from the healthcare sector and industries such as medical devices,  electronics and manufacturing. Participants may come from any organization broadly focused on advanced materials and manufacturing, or in a position to utilize or realize the value of 3D Printing for Healthcare applications.
