Additives and Colors for the 3D Printing Polymers

Last february 2015 Barcelona City was visited by the attendees of the 9th SPE ACE European Additives and Colors Conference. 30 technical presentations were performed under the exquisite and warm organization offered by Mrs. Carine Roos and and Mrs.Yetty Pawels from the Society of Plastics Engineers and the Organizing Commitee, headed by Mr. Alex Capuz from Nubiola Pigmentos.

Djamila Olivier, director of Voxeled Materials Consulting offered a presentation with the purpose of showing the Challenges and Opportunities of Polymers within the 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing Sector. It was pointed out that there are multiple challenges being faced by the engineers within the 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing sector. The good news are that there is a vast field of development and new bussiness within the 3D Printing technologies as stated by Olivier during her presentation:

"The incorporation of specifically suited additives for 3D Printing could enhance the processing performance and different aspects of functionality for 3D Printed parts. The facts are: 1) that the material is deposited point by point by means of a digital CAD input, 2) by the merging of those points a layer is formed and 3) from the merged stacking of layers the solid is built."

Olivier then presented the technology, process parameters and the current available materials for the main 3D Printing methods classified according the nature of the material, say: powder based processes, extrusion based processes and photopolymer based processes. In between every process description it was pointed out the opportunity of development highlighted by the author.
