3D Printing for Improved Surgery Planning

Last July 2015, Dr. Manel Sabaté Tenas, Head of the Cardiology Department of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona organized a seminar for the Cardiology Department about the applications of 3D Printed Models at Surgery Planning. In the seminar the basic principles of the 3D Printing techniques were introduced followed by an overview of the current applications of the techniques in the healthcare sector.

Examples of organs printing driven by the regenerative medicine laboratories of healthcare institutions worldwide were shown as well as different devices currently used for personalised and improved orthopaedic terapies. Regarding surgery planning, the most important and recognized applications were mentioned with special emphasis in the cardiovascular cases.

“There is already clinical evidence that the use of medical models for surgery planning improves the surgeon experience compared to the virtual visualization, leading to shorter surgery times and a decrease in the need of succesive surgical interventions.“ Stated Djamila Olivier during her presentation at the Hospital Clinic.

The attendees, fellows, residents and researchers rised an interesting discussion about the possible applications on specific cardiovascular patologies. This seminar was offered by 3DBiomedics, the Voxeled Materials program for the healthcare sector. Also, next october 2015, a training course about Medical Models Fabrication will be launched at Barcelona. It will be addressed to radiologists, biomedical engineers, surgeons, physicians and every profesional interested about the fabrication and applications of medical models. If you want to join this interesting training course, send us an e-mail, the application process is open!
